Fairfax County police carried out what they described as anunusual search at the headquarters of the America Online computerservice to obtain records sought for a homicide investigation.
County police Lt. Judi Lukens Torian said a warrant was servedMonday at the company's headquarters in Vienna at the request ofauthorities in Mercer County, N.J.
Lukens Torian said the company was not the target of theinvestigation but only a possible repository of information beingsought. She said the company, which provides electronic mail,Internet access and various other services, was "very cooperative."
America Online officials could not be reached for comment lastnight.
New Jersey authorities were seeking e-mail messages between aman slain this month in Mercer County, the suspect in his killingand some others who communicated with them through America Online,Lukens Torian said.
She did not identify those involved.
She said Fairfax County police acted as intermediaries in thesearch and have turned over the information obtained to the MercerCounty authorities.
