Vic; Pedestrian dies in hospital
MELBOURNE, Dec 30 AAP - A pedestrian has died in hospital after being hit by a car,
bringing to three the number of road fatalities in Victoria today.
The latest victim, a man in his 70s, died in the Austin Hospital after being hit by
a car as he crossed a road after leaving a tram in Bundoora, in north east Melbourne,
about 6pm (AEDT), police said.
The driver of the car, a 44-year-old man, was uninjured.
In earlier accidents, a 24-year-old man died when his car veered off the road, at Bairnsdale,
on Victoria's east coast at about 1.30am.
And a 35-year-old cyclist died from injuries sustained in an accident at Moolap, on
the Bellarine Peninsula.
Victoria's road toll for 2001 was now 451, compared with 406 at the same time last year.
The latest death takes the state's road toll for the Christmas-New Year holiday period to eight.
